Perseus and Andromeda

oil, canvas, 159 x 60.5 cm

Around the year 1900, artistic modernism was present in various forms and styles in European art. Among the "fashionable" styles and movements of this period, the most attached to the past was academic art. As can be seen in the work of Stein János, the academic style involves a very precious technique: correctly rendered anatomy, idealized shapes, fine chromatic transitions; as well as an inclination towards classical themes of painting, inspired by mythology.

With the help of Hermes - who gives him a sword, Aphrodite - who gives him a mirror and Hades who gives him a helmet that makes him invisible, Perseus manages to kill Medusa. Following this victory, he meets Andromeda...

Tied to a rock, Andromeda had been sacrificed by her father to the god Poseidon. She was to be devoured by the sea monster Cetus, but Perseus manages to save her, at the same time, falling in love with her.

Despite an apparent traditionalism, in academic art, under the influence of Art Nouveau style and other cultural features of the time, female nudes and the interactions between the characters are rendered in a strongly eroticized way.

The artist studied at the great art academies, in Berlin, Munich, Paris, and Budapest, where he learned an academic mannerism revealed in this work as well. He made frescoes, the work being probably a project for one of his orders. His academic tradition can be observed in the way the characters are represented, with interest in anatomy, but also in the interest, specific to the era, in the mythological theme.
