Katz Márton

Countryside lane in Baia Mare

oil, canvas, 51.5 x 65.5 cm

The young artist, Katz Márton, was one of the most talented of a group of rebel artists (besides András Kunovits, Lídia Agricola, Lilla Csizér, Sára Káhán, and Olivér Pittner), who were all excluded from the Painting School of Baia Mare because of their political views and Marxist ideologies.

This work represents one of his favorite themes: the landscape of Baia Mare. Although he painted the composition with a modern artistic conception, the viewer can instantly recognize the influence of Ziffer Sándor, through his powerful and vivid brushstrokes, reminding the viewer of the artist's rebellious spirit.

Even in this composition, Katz demonstrates a remarkable social sensitivity by incorporating peasant houses in his landscape, in a way referring to a social situation of that time. Precisely these interests and beliefs in radical political views which he could not leave aside caused his inability to fulfill his artistic potential and achieve his magnum opus.

The composition depicts a portion of a countryside lane from Baia Mare, viewed from above. The fresh, powerful and decorative brushstrokes are a clear testament to the fact that the artist was influenced by the painters Ziffer Sándor and Klein József. The heavy, horizontal railing from the foreground is perfectly balanced by the slightly curved vertical pillar and the expressive, flaring brushstrokes of the greenery. The slightly unbalanced, geometrical color patches of the houses give a playful touch to the whole scene.
