Kern (Kenedi) Andor

Art Deco nude on sofa

oil, canvas, 60 x 80 cm

The Art Deco style is most often associated with the American space. However, it appeared in France and influenced many European artists. A distinctive mark of Art Deco as a cultural phenomenon is the female flapper figure. Some of the characteristics of that fashion are also illustrated in Kern Andor's work: the supple and white face, the very thin and rounded eyebrows, the short, platinum colored hair and the red lipstick.

The treatment of form in this style, whether it is painting or drawing, is geometrization; the arms take on the appearance of cylinders, the breasts are hemispherical, and the pictorial surfaces are smoothed so that they seem to acquire an almost metallic luster.

This work illustrates how all the primary colors: yellow, red and blue, can be used in a work in relatively equal proportions, without being disturbing visually, when they are well enough balanced by combining them with black and white.

The artist studied in Budapest, Munich, and Paris. The work probably dates from the period spent in Paris, where he started working in 1930. The painting presents the distinctive components of art deco, the elegance, and the detached ornamentation, being treated with bright colors and light brushing.
